Great British Universities

Oxford and Cambridge

The Universities of Oxford and Cambridge are famous for their exceptional educational standards and long standing traditions.

Oxford

The town of Oxford is mainly known for its university, the first university established in the English speaking world. Today over 20,000 students attend Oxford every year. The University is actually a federation of over 40 independent colleges and halls, governed by the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor.
Students at Oxford must wear their caps and gowns for various ceremonies and events such as exams, formal dinners, University enrolment ceremony, graduation and commemoration ceremonies.

Cambridge

In 1209, there was a riot between towns and gowns in Oxford. Some of the gowns, aka scholars of the University, decided to leave Oxford and settle East, in Cambridge. There they started up their own University, based on the same principles as Oxford's. Since then there has been a long standing rivalry between these Universities, notably the traditional, annual Oxford-Cambridge Boat race.
